Deviant
Deviant is a series of self-portraits that explores dualities of the human condition, namely the wild and the civilized, the refined and the unrefined, and the perfect and the flawed. Drawing on personal experiences with individuals considered outsiders or social deviants I created large-scale figure drawings that acknowledge these clashes through poses and handling that are simultaneously forceful and subtle, intricate and heavy-handed, distorted and naturalistic. Though the figures scale aggressively dominates the space, they can also appear helpless, displayed physically and emotionally naked, lost in the emptiness of white space, and on display for the world to see. My hope is that the viewer explores the dual natures of these figures, and finds empathy for them, an empathy that would be extended to any other animal that is caught in a trap.
